ST. LOUIS – March 16, 2009 – Coming to an arena near you: 330 college wrestlers, 76 teams, 700 matches, 95,000 rabid fans. They’re all part of the 2009 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which take place at Scottrade Center Thursday to Saturday (March 19-21). The event is hosted by the St. Louis Sports Commission and the University of Missouri, which are producing the Championships for the fifth time this decade. St. Louis previously hosted the event in 2000, 2004, 2005 and 2008.

By Saturday night, 10 individual national titles and one team title will be determined. It will be the culmination of three intense, drama-filled days featuring six action-packed sessions.

TICKET INFO: Tickets are available for all six sessions of the Championships. Single-session tickets start at only $9. All-session tickets are as low as $60. Half-session packages are also available. Fans may purchase tickets through Ticketmaster online at www.ticketmaster.com; by phone at 314-241-1888; or in person at any Ticketmaster outlet, including the Scottrade Center box office.

EVENT IMPACT: With the average attendance expected to surpass 16,000 and total attendance exceeding 95,000, organizers anticipate the 2009 Championships will generate more than $10 million in economic impact. The event will bring more than 15,000 visitors to the region.

YOUTH WRESTLING CLINIC: Prior to the collegiate wrestlers hitting the mats, more than 300 “wrestlers of the future” will take to the floor at Scottrade Center for a free youth wrestling clinic from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday (March 17). Boys and girls ages 10 to 16 will receive instruction from the nation’s top college coaches and student-athletes. They’ll learn wrestling skills, conditioning tips, and the importance of practicing good sportsmanship. Parents are also invited to attend a free panel discussion on sportsmanship and NCAA sports.

SALUTE TO THE MILITARY: As part of the free NCAA Fan Festival at St. Louis Union Station, fans will have the chance to meet wrestling and military legends. From 5 to 6:15 p.m. Thursday (March 19), the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum will present “Glory Beyond the Sport: Wrestling and the Military,” a tribute to veterans of the armed forces who excelled in the sport. A select group of distinguished veterans will participate in a forum followed by an autograph session with the entire group of servicemen invited by the Hall of Fame.
