SPORTS COMMISSION SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR “GOOD SPORT” AWARD
AWARD RECIPIENT WILL BE HONORED AT THE AT&T NATIONAL SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS IN ST. LOUIS
ST. LOUIS – May 1, 2008 – The St. Louis Sports Commission is looking for the area’s best sport. In conjunction with the 2008 AT&T National Sportsmanship Awards, the organization is accepting nominations for its annual Good Sport Award, which honors a St. Louis area youth or high school athlete who demonstrates the ideals and very meaning of sportsmanship. The award recipient will be recognized at the AT&T National Sportsmanship Awards in St. Louis on June 5.
Candidates for the award should be nominated based on a specific extraordinary act of sportsmanship that occurred during the last 12 months. Nominees whose overall approach, both on and off the field, embodies sportsmanship will also be considered. The award is open to athletes between the ages of 8 and 18 in the greater St. Louis region. To nominate a deserving candidate, visit www.nationalsportsmanshipawards.com and click on “Nominate a Good Sport.” All nominations must be submitted or post-marked by Thursday, May 15, 2008.
The Good Sport Award was created and is presented by the Sports Commission’s Associates – a group of area young professionals who volunteer to assist the organization’s efforts. Last year, the Associates honored Ritenour High School golfer Chad Riegel, who made a decision of honesty and integrity for the ages at the Missouri district golf tournament. After mistakenly hitting an opponent’s ball, Chad self-reported the error, which resulted in a two-stroke penalty. That act of sportsmanship cost him a trip to the State tournament as his final score ended up being one stroke away from making the cut.
Produced by the Sports Commission and the Citizenship Through Sports Alliance, the 2008 AT&T National Sportsmanship Awards takes place at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 5 at the Chase Park Plaza in St. Louis. The event celebrates all that’s right in sports, honoring athletes and personalities from around the nation for their integrity, class, selflessness, perseverance, kindness, community service, and overall commitment to sportsmanship. This year’s list of award winners includes Rams linebacker Chris Draft, Blues goalie Manny Legacy, and other amazing individuals who have the most inspiring stories. The event will also feature a live keynote interview with Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig. For tickets and more information, call 314-992-0686 or visit www.nationalsportsmanshipawards.com.
