SPORTS FOR KIDS HOSTS CLINIC FOR YOUTH SOCCER COACHES SATURDAY AT SLU

ST. LOUIS — Aug. 6, 2002 — The Sports Commission’s Sports for Kids program extends an invitation to youth soccer coaches seeking to sharpen their coaching skills. As part of its Coach it Right! initiative, Sports for Kids will conduct a free clinic for youth soccer coaches Saturday, Aug. 10, at Hermann Stadium on the campus of Saint Louis University. The clinic runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

SLU head coach Dan Donigan and assistant coach Mike Sorber will be among the instructors providing tips on how to teach youngsters proper fundamentals. Donigan was a three-time All-American at the University of Connecticut. He joined the Billikens coaching staff in 1997 and became head coach in 2001. Sorber was a four-year standout with the Billikens. In 1994, he played on the U.S. World Cup Team and then spent several seasons playing professionally in the MLS.

The soccer clinic is part of a series of youth coaches clinics organized by Sports for Kids. Under the banner of Coach it Right!, the clinics aim to develop and augment the skills possessed by youth sports instructors, enabling them to become better coaches. The clinics also focus on sportsmanship — emphasizing the importance of building a child’s self-esteem, showing respect for officials and opponents, and conveying an overall positive attitude in competition. In July, Sports for Kids hosted a baseball-softball clinic that featured instruction from Washington University baseball coach Ric Lessmann, SLU softball coach Jim Molloy, and Cardinals TV analyst Al Hrabosky.

"Ensuring that children enjoy positive experiences through their participation in sports is at the core of the Sports for Kids mission," said Troye Frank, director of Sports for Kids. "Coaches play a major role in shaping the experiences of young athletes. So Sports for Kids strives to give them the necessary tools and mindset to make those experiences most rewarding."

The clinic is open to all youth soccer coaches in the St. Louis area. Coaches can register for the clinic by calling 314-992-0689.
