KICKOFF TIME ANNOUNCED FOR MISSOURI-ILLINOIS FOOTBALL GAME AUG. 31 IN ST. LOUIS

ST. LOUIS — June 10, 2002 — The 2002 Missouri-Illinois football game at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis will kick off at 2:30 p.m. CDT Saturday, Aug. 31. The game will be televised by ABC Sports. It is the season opener for both universities and marks the first meeting between the Tigers and Illini since 1994. More than three decades have passed since either school played in St. Louis. As part of a two-year agreement, the teams will also kick off the 2003 season in downtown St. Louis. The series is organized by the St. Louis Sports Commission and the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission.

"With the great rivalry between the two schools and with Illinois coming off a Big Ten Championship season, it’s a natural for the game to have such strong regional interest," said Sports Commission President Frank Viverito. "The mid afternoon start time is also a plus as fans will have a chance to spend a college football Saturday in downtown and soak up what we’re hoping will be a bowl-like atmosphere."

To provide that additional bowl flavor, a variety of activities will surround the Missouri-Illinois game, including a Friday Kickoff Luncheon, team pep rallies on Saturday, and the Big Muddy Blues Festival on Laclede’s Landing Sunday and Monday. A tentative schedule of events is posted on the game’s official web site: www.stlouissports.org/MizzouIllini. Individual tickets for the 2002 Missouri-Illinois game go on sale to the general public July 10 through Ticketmaster. Groups of 20 or more may purchase group tickets beginning June 17 by calling 314-342-5244. This number is for group tickets only.
