LOUIS Jan. 16, 2001 St. Louis area attorney Walter Lamkin is the new chair of the St. Louis Sports Commission, the regional non-profit organization that benefits St. Louis through sports. Lamkin takes the baton from three-time Olympic gold medalist and East St. Louis native Jackie Joyner-Kersee, who will now fill the role of chair emeritus. Joyner-Kersee had chaired the Commission since 1997. (click here for The Lamkin File ) "Were grateful for all that Jackie has done for the Sports Commission and for the time and energy she devotes not only to our organization, but to the entire community," said Sports Commission President Frank Viverito. "Were pleased that Jackie will remain affiliated with the Sports Commission as chair emeritus, and were equally delighted to have Walter Lamkin now leading the charge. Walter cares deeply about making a positive impact in St. Louis and he has already given more to the Sports Commission and the community than one could ever ask." Lamkin, a partner in the Chesterfield law firm McCarthy, Leonard, Kaemmerer, Owen, Lamkin & McGovern LC, has served as the Commissions vice chair since 1998. He has also held two terms as secretary and been a Commission member since 1993. With Joyner-Kersees second term as chair expiring, the Commissions Nominating Committee recommended Lamkin for the post. The organizations Board approved the recommendation at its Dec. 15 quarterly meeting. "Its a tremendous honor and privilege to be chosen to chair the St. Louis Sports Commission," Lamkin said. "This organization has come a long way in just a few short years, and it has been incredibly rewarding to be affiliated with such an energetic and dedicated group of St. Louisans who are capable of taking our community to new heights. Im a firm believer that everyone has a responsibility to give back to the community in which he or she lives and the most fortunate among us should carry a greater proportion of that obligation. So to be part of an effort that has such a positive impact on our region is very fulfilling." During his term as chair, Lamkin hopes to focus on continuing St. Louis successful string of hosting national-caliber events, further raising the regional consciousness about the Commissions Sports for Kids program, and celebrating the unique aspects of the St. Louis region as it relates to sports in general. "This is truly a landmark time for our region," he said. "St. Louis sports success both on and off the playing field has elevated its profile nationally. Our community is riding a tremendous wave of momentum thanks to sports, and its exciting to think the best is still to come." In addition to Lamkins appointment, the Commissions volunteer Board elected two new officers and approved the nominations of 15 new directors(click here for a complete listing of directors ). Doug Albrecht, CEO of Centric Group, becomes vice chair of the organization; and Bob Wallace, senior vice president of administration for the St. Louis Rams, is named secretary and treasurer. Lamkin, Albrecht and Wallace will each serve two-year terms through Dec. 31, 2002. Lamkin is the Sports Commissions sixth chair, succeeding previous chairs Tee Baur, Harry Morley, Nick Penniman, Joe Farrell, and Joyner-Kersee. |
