Editor's Note: Summer’s almost here and the St. Louis Sports Commission’s calendar is heating up!  With the 10th Annual AT&T National Sportsmanship Awards around the corner, and the highly-anticipated 2008 State Farm Arch Rivalry game between ranked Missouri and Illinois squads closing fast, there’s plenty to get excited about in the coming months.  And don’t forget the many other major events on deck in 2009.  Read on for all the exciting details!

AT&T NATIONAL SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS
CELEBRATE ALL THAT’S RIGHT IN SPORTS JUNE 5

Western Oregon's Sara Tucholsky is carried around the bases by Central Washington players Liz Wallace (L) and Mallory Holtman. All three will appear at the 2008 AT&T National Sportsmanship Awards.

One of the most moving nights in sports returns to the Chase Park Plaza’s Khorassan Ballroom on June 5, 2008, as the 10th Annual AT&T National Sportsmanship Awards honors America’s most respected athletes and sports personalities. Presented by the Sports Commission and the Citizenship Through Sports Alliance, the event celebrates all that’s right in sports, honoring individuals from around the nation for their integrity, class, selflessness, kindness, community service and overall commitment to sportsmanship. Among this year’s award recipients are Mallory Holtman and Liz Wallace, the Central Washington University softball players who made national headlines last month when they carried an opponent around the bases who had hit a home run but suffered a torn ACL rounding first. The event will also honor St. Louis Rams linebacker Chris Draft, St. Louis Blues goaltender Manny Legace, and several other individuals who aren’t necessarily high-profile stars, but bring with them the most inspiring stories. The event’s live keynote interview will feature Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, who will be recognized with a lifetime achievement award for his role in the game’s significant renaissance and charitable endeavors. Individual tickets and table sponsorships are still available. For more information, click here or call 314-992-0686.

HOST CITIES ANNOUNCED FOR 2008 TOUR OF MISSOURI
After an exceptionally successful inaugural Tour of Missouri in 2007, the Show-Me State will again welcome 120 of the world’s elite cyclists on a 600-mile point-to-point race, to be held Sept. 8-14, 2008. The second edition of the Tour will include seven days of racing and conclude – as it did in 2007 – with a fantastic finish in Downtown St. Louis. More than 60,000 St. Louisans came out to watch George Hincapie and Team Discovery emerge victorious on the streets of St. Louis last year. This summer ’s finale will take place with a similar circuit race on Sunday, Sept. 14. To read more about the 2008 race and its course through Missouri, click here.

NOTES
The Sports Commission congratulates the Washington University athletics program, which has won three Division III national titles this year. The latest came last week when its men’s tennis team captured its first-ever national championship, adding to titles won by the Bears in women’s volleyball and men’s basketball. Longtime men’s hoops coach Mark Edwards, 477-233 in 27 seasons on the Danforth Campus, celebrated his first championship in March when the Bears defeated No. 2-ranked and defending national champion Amherst College.
