Editors Note:  Welcome to the first electronic issue of “Impact Player,” the newsletter of the St. Louis Sports Commission.  When it comes to producing events, we like to be ahead of the curve.  But in the case of our newsletter, we’re following a trend – moving from hard copy to e-mail.  Keep an eye on your inbox for future editions as we keep you posted on the latest news at the Sports Commission – the privately funded non-profit organization responsible for benefiting the St. Louis region through sports.

In this issue, we look ahead to what’s on deck for the Sports Commission, including the 2005 NCAA Wrestling Championships, 2005 NCAA Final Four and the 2006 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.  But before addressing the future, we reflect on the past and what has been one of the most exciting and jam-packed periods in the Sports Commission’s 15-year history.  Between March and August, the organization was involved in the NCAA Wrestling Championships, NCAA Men’s Basketball St. Louis Regional, U.S. Olympic Women’s Marathon Trials, U.S. Olympic Diving Trials, ATHENS 2004 Olympic Torch Relay, St. Louis’ Olympic Centennial Celebration, and the U.S. Senior Open.  Be sure to check out some of our favorite highlights from those events by clicking on the links below:

·         2004 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships – March 18-20

·         2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Women’s Marathon – April 3

·         2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Diving – June 7-13

·         ATHENS 2004 Olympic Torch Relay & St. Louis’ Olympic Centennial Celebration – June 17

2,500 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR 2005 NCAA FINAL FOUR

The St. Louis Organizing Committee for the 2005 NCAA Final Four is looking for 2,500 volunteers to help St. Louis stage one of its biggest sporting events ever.  Volunteering is one of the best ways to be part of the “Big Dance.”

The 2005 Final Four takes place April 2 & 4 at the Edward Jones Dome.  Volunteers will welcome and assist the more than 50,000 fans expected to visit St. Louis during the event.  Specific volunteer roles include: serving as greeters and staffing information desks at the airport and hotels; assisting at hospitality functions; working the Hoop City
® interactive fan festival and NCAA YES® Clinics; providing assistance to fans outside the Edward Jones Dome; and helping with various transportation needs connected to the Final Four.

All volunteers will receive an official volunteer uniform – polo shirt, jacket, cap and name tag – free of charge.  Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have completed high school; transportation volunteers must be at least 25 years of age.  All volunteers are required to work at least two shifts, which could last from three to five hours each depending on the type of assignment.    A list of volunteer opportunities and additional details can be found on the volunteer application.

Those interested in volunteering can obtain the application by visiting www.stlloc.org/volunteers.htm or by calling Becky Painter at 314-992-0684.  The Sports Commission has the task of recruiting and training all volunteers for the 2005 Final Four.

NCAA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS RETURN TO THE GATEWAY CITY IN 2005

For the third time in the last six years, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will be at Savvis Center in Downtown St. Louis.  This past March, more than 15,000 fans, athletes, coaches, and officials visited the Gateway City, generating nearly $10 million in economic impact and accounting for more than 10,000 hotel room nights.  The total attendance at Savvis Center was 87,675.

In 2005, the top collegiate wrestlers will be in St. Louis March 17-19 for the 75th installment of the Championships.  Ticket sales for the 2005 tourney are already ahead of the previous year’s pace.  You can purchase tickets by completing an official ticket application, which can be found at www.stlsports.org/wrestling/ticket.html or obtained by calling 877-722-1604.  (Sports Commission members will have an opportunity to purchase prime seats in the lower level later this year.)

St. Louis is the first city in NCAA Wrestling Championships history to be home to the tournament in back-to-back years.  The Sports Commission co-hosts the event with the University of Missouri.  Both partners will soon begin assembling a bid for the 2008-11 Championships.

TICKETS ON SALE FOR 2006 U.S. FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ST. LOUIS

Now is a great time to get great seats for the 2006 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships in St. Louis.  All-event tickets are on sale for the event, which takes place Jan. 7-15, 2006 at Savvis Center.  It will feature the marquee names in American figure skating, including Michelle Kwan (pictured left) and Sasha Cohen, who will compete for a national championship and a spot on the 2006 U.S. Olympic Team.

To purchase tickets, visit https://www.savviscenter.net/usfsa/tickets/index.asp.  The all-event ticket package includes admission to all competition events and practice sessions except the Chevy Skating Spectacular, which must be purchased separately.  Individual session tickets will go on sale approximately four months prior to the Championships.

Volunteers are also needed for the event.  For volunteer information, visit www.stlouis2006.com/volunteers.asp.  The Sports Commission is working with the Heartland Inter-Club – an organization made up of seven local figure skating clubs – and Savvis Center to produce the 2006 Championships.

BECOME A FRIEND OF THE SPORTS COMMISSION

The Sports Commission recently introduced its “Friends” program, a new opportunity for individuals to become affiliated with the organization and support its efforts.  Sports Commission Friends make a $100 annual contribution to the organization and receive the following benefits:

  • Sports Commission gift featuring the organization's logo.
  • An invitation to the Sports Commission's year-end holiday reception.
  • Subscription to the Sports Commission's e-newsletter and organizational updates.
  • Opportunity to purchase tickets for selected Sports Commission events ahead of the general public.

Help make America’s best sports city even better by becoming a Friend of the Sports Commission.  To join, simply click here to obtain a Friends application.  You can also find additional opportunities to support the Sports Commission (as a Partner or Champion) at www.stlsports.org/join/index.htm.

As an independent non-profit organization that is responsible for raising 100 percent of its budget, the Sports Commission relies primarily on the private sector – local companies and individuals – to provide the resources it needs to be successful.  The Sports Commission thanks its current Partners, Champions and Friends for their support.  With a series of spectacular events ahead, including the 2005 NCAA Final Four, there is no better time to be involved in the organization – and no better time to make a positive impact on the St. Louis community.

SPORTS FOR KIDS:  HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE IN ST. LOUIS LIVE HEALTHIER, HAPPIER, AND MORE PRODUCTIVE LIVES THROUGH SPORTS

The Sports Commission’s Sports for Kids program takes a unique approach to helping young people in
St. Louis.  Under the banner of Coach it Right!, Sports for Kids organizes free coaching clinics that educate and motivate volunteer youth coaches in various sports.  The clinics emphasize the value of sportsmanship and develop coaching skills to help participants become better coaches, and in turn, lead to more positive experiences for area children on the playing field.  More than 500 coaches have attended Coach it Right! clinics this year.  With each coach working with approximately 20 kids, the Coach it Right! initiative has had a positive impact on 10,000 young people in St. Louis.

In addition to Coach it Right!, Sports for Kids also hosted a Sports Career Day for more than 200 students in the Fort Zumwalt School District in St. Charles County in March, and helped organize the NCAA Youth Education through Sports (YES) Wrestling Clinic at Savvis Center later that month.

For information on upcoming Sports for Kids events and clinics, visit www.stlsports.org/kids/index.htm.  You can also view highlights of this year’s Sports for Kids activities by clicking on the events and links below.

LAST, BUT NOT (LEE)ST…

The Sports Commission will miss Lee Michelson, who resigned as the organization’s vice president of development to take a position with Ronald McDonald House Charities effective Sept. 15.  Lee had been responsible for the Sports Commission’s revenue generation and fundraising activities.  Since he joined the staff in 1999, the Sports Commission and its affiliated St. Louis Sports Foundation experienced tremendous revenue growth.  Lee’s efforts helped the organization establish many new relationships, expand its base of support, and achieve greater financial strength and stability.  While we are happy for Lee and wish him the best, we will miss his dedication, tenacity, friendship and camaraderie.
