John was the 2005 recipient of the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award. Presented annually, the Clemente Award honors the Major League Baseball player who combines outstanding baseball skills with devoted work in the community. John and his wife, Dyan, have been very active in the Atlanta community for many years. The couple contributes countless hours, funds, and resources to charitable organizations and programs that have a positive impact on children and families. They formed the John and Dyan Smoltz Foundation in 1997 to support their many philanthropic endeavors, including Kings Ridge Christian School. Established in 2001, Kings Ridge has received more than $1 million from the foundation. John was one of four Braves players to contribute $75,000 to help fund the Atlanta Braves Baseball Academy. In addition to his work to support education and youth baseball, John has been a supporter of the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Through his “Strike Out Hunger” campaign, he has helped raise more than $300,000 and 70,000 pounds of food since 1997. John is one of the Braves all-time top pitchers. He ranks in the top 10 of several of the club’s all-time pitching lists, including saves (1st), games pitched (3rd), strikeouts (2nd) and wins (6th). He is one of only two players in major league history to collect at least 150 wins and 150 saves.
