In a sport known for its individual performances and accomplishments, Philip epitomizes team spirit and perseverance. A swimmer at Bates College, he made an incredible comeback from a life-altering event. In February 2003, Philip was attending a concert at The Station Night Club in West Warwick, R.I., when pyrotechnics exploded and the club burst into flames. More than 100 people died in the blaze that made national news. Philip was left with injures so severe that he was placed in a drug-induced coma for three weeks following the fire. When he was released from the hospital, he had 45 percent lung capacity. After more than a year of rehabilitation, he defied the odds and returned to the pool for his senior season with 87 percent lung capacity. Diagnosed with pneumonia two days before the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championships, Philip swam the butterfly leg of the preliminary medley relay, and cheered the team on after it qualified for the finals. His leadership was instrumental in developing positive team policies, promoting responsible social behavior, inspiring serious practice attitude and advocating dedication to off-season conditioning. Since the fire, Philip has done what he can to make the future brighter for other survivors of the tragedy. He, along with several other survivors and volunteers, organized the Station Family Fund. The group has raised nearly $750,000 for survivors and families of the deceased.
